Building the right chicken coup isn’t hard to do, even for a beginner. As long as you have the right tools, can follow simple instructions, or can even transfer your ideas to paper, you can build healthy and safe hen houses. A good place to start with if you are a novice is to do some researching into what all raising chickens entails. You will find that raising chickens is not only relatively easy, but also pretty inexpensive with many benefits, one certainly not having to buy eggs again.
Your chickens need a few things to be happy and healthy. A chicken coup that is warm, dry and safe, enough food and water, and an area to roam freely. Hen houses don’t have to be that complicated, simple “A” frame designs work really well and can be moved around the yard. There are many different examples available on the internet to pick from, or to give you ideas of your own.
Since your chicken coup is designed for outside uses, you should use wood that has been treated to resist weather and bugs. Use 2×4’s for the framework, and at least half inch plywood for the top and sides. One of the things you will want to remember, make sure the living area is easy to get into, for cleaning out waste and collecting eggs. It should also be coated in some kind of clear non toxic sealer, to give extra protection.
In many cases, you can find materials for hen houses very inexpensively. One is to go into local home improvement retailers and look in their scrap bins. Make sure that any lumber you pick out of these bins isn’t warped, or has too many knots in it. If you can, there are many flea markets, and yard sales in the country where farmers go to sell and trade, you can sometimes find deals on lumber, and even on chicken wire for hen runs. You can sometimes find good deals in the local penny pincher newspaper.
There are many resources online to help you with all of your chicken coup needs. There are many plans and designs, as well as prefabricated kits that all you have to do is put together and you are done. Other kits come with detailed plans and instructions for one, or even a few designs, including a complete materials list of all the things you will need.
Even if you know nothing about hen houses, or how to build a chicken coup, there are books on the subject that are complete DIY courses. This is a good idea to have around in general, because they cover so many things. You can even learn about the daily things you need to do to raise healthy chickens, identifying some of the most common problems, how to resolve them, and how to tell if the eggs are edible, or live.
